Intro by Iona, article by professional makeup artist Emily Rose
This post was inspired by my guy friends who have come to me for skincare advice of late. Now that most are in their early 30s, the fine lines and wrinkles are starting to creep up. Having worked in the beauty industry for years, I have a plethora of tips to offer women and so for you handsome men, I’ve asked professional makeup artist Emily Rose to give us some great grooming tips.
Grooming For Men
I for one celebrate the well groomed man. There is nothing more alluring than waking up to your freshly showered man, sporting smooth, radiant skin, looking and smelling so divine that you could drag him straight back to bed!
When it comes to skincare products, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between men and women’s other than the packaging and the smell. My husband regularly uses my moisturiser, and I regularly use his! Both work just as well. The only thing I would say is that some male exfoliating scrubs are slightly more granular than women’s, and some moisturisers are slightly thicker in texture and obviously smell more like aftershave.
Most men want simple, because they shop quickly, they’d rather not stand there for hours on end translating cosmetic labels, they want to know what’s in the tub and what its purpose is, i.e.:
For those of you who still feel bamboozled by the endless reams of products and their claims to perform miracles, lets talk male language and break it down for you.
A Cleanser – As quoted by my husband “Something that you put on in the shower, you put it on your hands and rub it on your face, you wash it off and it makes your skin go all squeaky”.
The actual aim: Cleanser is a face wash, or face cream that removes dirt, bacteria and impurities from the pores and surface of your skin, throughout the day and can cause a dull looking complexion, dry skin, oily skin or spots. Cleanser keeps your face clean, it is soap for your face – and please, don’t use regular soap for your face gents, its drying, ageing and a bit of a no no in the world that is cosmetics.
Exfoliate – Face Scrub, a cream that contains granular bits of sand or the like, that removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.
Moisturizer – Hydrates your skin and keeps it youthful. It is especially important to moisturize your skin at nighttime, because this is when it is at its most active, and after you cleanse so that you replenish any natural oils in the skin that may have been lost.
Face Mask – Now, not all guys will opt for one, but, if you want a super chill out session just for you, a facmask is an awesome way of deep cleansing the skin whist relaxing. A mask is applied to the skin after cleansing with cleanser, and is usually left on for between 10 and 20 minutes.
To complete your perfectly groomed attire make sure you dress the part as well. This summer it’s all about chino shorts and loud prints. Chino shorts are a must have piece for any well-edited wardrobe. Style this bang on trend shirt from boohoo with a pair of shorts, for the perfect smart casual look.
