Nars vs Four New Blushes & a Blush How-To

how-to-blush

It makes you look awake when you’re not and when you are sick and all colour is lost, it makes you look a lot less ghostly. Skipped the gym several times? It’ll give you that ‘I’ve just been for a morning run’ flush. Yes – it’s blush and if you know how to use it, it can work wonders. I’ve been using Nars in Orgasm for years. There’s a reason why it’s a best selling, it’s universally flattering. But, recently there’s a new crop of blushes and we took them for a road test. Nars vs Four New Blushes – can you replace such a universally flattering colour? Read on to find out and for a blush how-to.

The Contenders

1. The Balm Instain – Houndsooth

A pretty pink muave that gives you a pretty pink flush. It’s a sheer taupe colour that needs to be layered, especially if you have a darker, olive complexion like mine. I love this shade because it looks so natural. Oh! And if you’re looking for tips on how to apply blush, read on. Anyway, if you’re after that porcelain skin and pretty pinks look, this is the colour for you.

2. The Balm – Frat Boy

The packaging is quirky and fun, a lot like the Benefit packaging but what I love about this brand is that it’s free from parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, phthlates, GMOs and Triclosa.  It’s a velvety smooth, peachy-apricot shadow/blush adds the perfect amount of colour for a foxy flush. Adds to the sun-kissed glow and perfect for summer.

3. Max Factor Flawless Perfection – Classic Rose

If you’re looking for that fresh post after glow, this is the one that does that job. It’s a lot like the Nars blush but goes lightly on the sparkle for a nice matte finish. It’s also pretty pigmented so there’s no need to layer, especially for a day time look.

4. Covergirl Clean Glow – Blush and Bronzer

When I received this, I was a bit intimidated. What do you do with a palette of multiple shades? Our friends at Covergirl gave us a little help here. What to do if you want to contour like a Kardashian.

1. Begin with the contour, or darkest shade in your palette and apply to the hollow space below your cheekbones

2. Apply the medium shade to the apples of your cheeks and sweep upwards toward the hairline

3. For a youthful glow, highlight the tops of your cheeks with the lightest shade

How to Apply Blush Like a Pro

1. Use a medium-sized blush. Most use a round fluffy brush thinking it’ll give them better coverage but if you’re like me, cheeks only flush on the fleshy part of the cheek.

2. The trick is to apply it to a small area of your cheek, where your natural colour shows when you are flushed.

3. Do not suck your cheeks together and apply your blush below the cheekbone.

4. Apply in daylight
