Eye Makeup for Dummies

eye-makeup-for-dummies

I have uneven eyelids and for years I shied away from eye shadows, liquid eyeliner…or anything that would emphasise the unevenness of my eyes. It wasn’t till recently (after 30 odd years of existence) that I finally discovered some fool proof tips to mastering eye makeup for any occasion. The most exciting part is that it doesn’t require much at it – just three things! Here’s my take on eye makeup for dummies.

Eyelash Extensions – Choose Wisely

The makeup industry makes gazillions of dollars selling mascara so it’s no wonder that eyelash extensions are all the buzz. They give you that ‘done up’ look 24/7 without the hassle of removing the stubborn mascara residue that clings to your face even after you’ve had a good scrub. I recently discovered how important it is to find a technician who not only knows what they’re doing but one that uses tools that will minimise the damage done to your lashes.

Most people are concerned that eyelash extensions will break or weaken the lashes and they should have cause for concern. Synthetic eyelashes tend to be quite heavy and when applied on top of your own lashes, it could cause them to droop. This may not cause any damage if you occasionally indulge in extensions but if you’re getting refills every month, you may want to consider getting silk lashes instead.

For a long while I thought I was allergic to the adhesive technicians used for the extensions but a visit to my current lady (email us if you want her details) taught me that it really depends on the glue used. Some are effective in helping the lashes stay for longer but they are chock full of chemicals and can not only damage your lashes but the skin around your eyes as well. Opt for a technician who uses medical grade adhesive.

When done right, eyelash extensions can offer your lashes a ‘break’ from the makeup. This can actually help promote the growth and the health of your lashes.

This sounds like an advertorial for my eyelash lady but seriously, this is an industry that isn’t governed meaning anyone can do it. Choose wisely.

Waterproof Eyeliner

I used to hate the idea of anything that is waterproof. For me it just meant, I’d have to put in more effort taking my makeup off. But this recent discovery by Max Factor is amazing for its staying power AND its ability to strip off on demand. For those without a steady hand, the felt tip pen is also easy to use.

Thank you to the team at Tomorrow Land Group for always introducing me to such great finds.

If you like eye liner pens, you will LOVE this brow definer by Victoria Curtis. This pen-like applicator  is great for seasoned brow experts and the rookies. It’s fine soft tip makes it easy to layer and shade making it difficult to go overboard with colour. This soft taupe is ideal for fair maidens and blondies. Bonus: It’s free from paragons and fragrance.

A Brown Smokey Eye

Mastering a smokey eye should be on everyone’s list if you want to get that professionally done makeup look for date nights, weddings, parties…etc. It makes the eyes pop. I’ve always been terrible at it. I never knew what colours went together, how to manipulate colours to even out my uneven eyelids or how to blend it altogether until I came across this Chanel Quad Eyeshadow. I wrote about this recently in my neutral makeup edit but thanks to this quad wonder, it’s the first time I’ve been able to master the smokey eye all on my own. The colours are flattering and you can adjust the intensity of the smokey eye through layering and by following this very simple application guide. Well worth the $90 and not because it’s a prestige brand but because it really is fantastic.
