Things to Learn from Christmas Rom-Coms

christmas-movies

No Christmas season is complete without our favourite rom-coms. There’s nothing like a festive film to kick start holiday mode. Look beyond the warm fuzzies and cliche endings and you might actually find a moral to the story. So here is a list of things to learn from Christmas rom-coms.

Movie: Love Actually

A reminder that maybe your married friends aren’t the ones to envy. Following several story plots, Love Actually has its funny and somber moments with cliche office affairs and family betrayal. Really though, it’s the singles who come out on top. A single ginger English man goes to America and scores (pun intended) a foursome with American hotties, English secretary Natalie finds her dream man in Hugh Grant, Britan’s Prime Minister. Two porn star actors takes love outside the bedroom.

Moral of the Story:

  • When your hot Brazilian model-eqsue co-worker wants to sleep with you, you don’t take calls…from anyone
  • Old pervy rockstars can make a come back
  • Lobsters had a place in the nativity scene
  • When in a rush, don’t ask Mr.Bean to wrap your presents
  • Claudia Schiffer can end up at your next PT meeting

Movie: Bridget Jones Diary

Though the beginning is quite cringe worthy to watch, there are many memorable moments a single gal in her 30s can relate to: weight gain, the creepy uncle, being the only single person at a family xmas lunch. But Bridget eventually meets Colin Firth, giving all single woman out there that she too will find someone who owns an equally embarrassing holiday jumper.

Moral of the Story:

  • Never flirt or date your boss unless he is Hugh Grant. In that case you can kind of forget all the dickhead things he does in the movie
  • Make sure the blouse you’re wearing is not see through. If it is, at least wear nice underwear
  • You can enjoy ice cream and cigarettes AND still meet the man of your dreams
  • Two men vying for your affection never gets old
  • Colin Firth can’t fly kick

Movie: The Holiday

Best for those who are getting over a breakup/divorce, The Holiday is a reminder that there is a silver lining to cheating scoundrels and douche bags. A very rich and newly separated Cameron Diaz + lonely Kate Winslet get through the holidays through a house swap for a change of scenery. Both meet their leading men proving- yes you can find love even in a small cold English town where supposedly no men (except for Jude Law) exists in town.

Moral of the Story:

  • Music in every movie tells you how you’re meant to feel. Keep this in mind the next time you want to manipulate someone
  • When considering a career change, look no further than making movie trailers. According to Cameron Diaz’s character, it’ll get you a mansion in Hollywood
  • Some guys have a special radar to come back to you when you’re happy…only to disappoint you again
  • Costumes made from napkins (aka Mr.Napkin Head) are awesome, especially if they are made by Jude Law
  • Casual flings can lead to the real thing but mostly only in movies where Cameron Diaz and Jude Law can sob and still look ravishing

Movie: Crazy Stupid Love

This movie is the classic example of what can happen when you let yourself go (cue Steve Carrell). If you’re dating a womaniser (like Ryan Gosling)  you’ll know that even THEY will eventually want to settle down with the right woman. If that’s not you, step aside and let his Dirty Dancing moves seduce another.

Moral of the Story:

  • Ryan Gosling can take in underlings like Steve Carrell to save marriages with swagger and womanising ways
  • You can make a dramatic entrance into a swanky bar looking like a drowned cat and Ryan Gosling will still want to go home with you
  • You can actually find love in a bar
  • Dirty Dancing moves can win over any woman. Time to work on those abs and chin ups
  • Ryan Gosling’s abs
