7 of the Best Travel Beauty Tips for Your Next Romantic Getaway

My 9-5 gig keeps me on land most of the time but when I do travel, it’s for weeks at a time and it’s always to far flung locations. 10-15 hour flights are never good for the skin. The cabin air is extremely dry and ridden with germs. If your next romantic getaway is overseas, you’ll love these travel beauty tips from my jet setting friends.
Pack Blotting Papers – Even if you’re face isn’t typically oily
Pack blotting papers. Notice how your skin gets really oily even when you don’t have oily skin? It’s because your skin is dry and compensating by producing more oily. Blot when necessary and hydrate the skin from within by drink at least a full glass of water every hour or, when you’re thirsty (duh).
Decant – BYO your own products
Hotels give you mini shampoos and conditioners but depending on where you’re staying, the quality of amenities might be questionable. If you want to skimp on packing toiletries, at least pack a travel sized conditioner, which some hotels may not have. If you’re going on a resort type getaway, pack a leave in conditioner. Salt water and sun can leave hair feeling like straw, put some leave in conditioner on to the ends of the hair before you head out to the beach.
Do NOT wear makeup
My flight attendant friends hate wearing makeup when they’re working in flight – so much that when they have a break to snooze, they take time to take it all off and put it back on when they could be using the time to get some extra shut eye. If you can, don’t wear any makeup and make sure you moisturise.
Buy Estee Lauder
Having worked in the beauty industry for years, I don’t ‘buy’ into marketing hype. But I’ve seen this Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair on my mom’s dresser since I was little and most recently discovered that my flight attendant friends buy these in bulk (and they aren’t cheap…even if you buy them at duty free).
The marketing speak promises to “reveal a smoother, more radiant, younger look”. When I put it to the test, it did a pretty good job. Your skin cells repair at night so it makes since that you’d use a product that aids with the skin cell repair.
Forget Watering Mists
I’m not sure whose idea it was to recommend water/rose mists as a travel staple but those mists can actually dehydrate the skin. That’s not to say you should skip water altogether. Drink lots of water – it’s the best way to hydrate your skin.
Invest in Facials Post Flight
You’re on holiday. Why not indulge a little? Your skin will likely be dull and dry post flight. A facial will give it the proper clean and moisture it needs. If you can’t find a trust worthy and credible aesthetician, pack sheet masks.
Pack Sunscreen
Sunscreens have strict rules when it comes to import/export. This means you may not always find the sunscreen of choice if you run out. Whilst we’re on the topic of sunscreen, opt for a physical sunblock instead of sunscreen – it has less chemicals.
Note: If you’re heading out for the night and plan to take photos, make sure you wash the sunscreen off your face. Otherwise you’ll look ghostly white in pictures. Also avoid foundations with SPF for night photos (anything under SPF 15 will look fine).
